From 23rd January 2017, Skocia Web Design will be providing free SSL Certificates on all our newly built website courtesy of Let’s Encrypt.

SSL (https) is security technology, establishing an encrypted link between a web server (such as your website) and a browser (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox etc.). An SSL certificate is essential if you are taking credit card payments, login credentials or any other sensitive data directly on your website.

What is Let’s Encrypt?

Let’s Encrypt is a free and open certificate authority, providing domain-validated security certificates. They are backed by some of the biggest names on the web including Google, Facebook and Automattic, the people behind WordPress. Let’s Encrypt is a service provided by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG).

Why is an SSl Certificate important?

The most important reason is that https means your website is secure for your users. Also, visitors to your website will be reassured to see your website is secure. Even if you have an eCommerce store and customers are redirected to the PayPal page to pay for their goods, having your entire website marked as secure will give your customers peace of mind.

At the end of January 2017, Google will be releasing an update to it’s Chrome web browser. Google will then mark websites with password and credit card input fields with a Not Secure warning in the url address bar. If you’re not taking card payments or have a password input field on your website then you’re safe for now but sometime in the future it’s expected that all http websites will be marked as Not Secure by Google. At the moment all http websites are marked with just a circle with an “i” inviting users to click for more information.

Another important reason is that Google is now using https as a ranking signal, albeit a small one compared to on-page content, but still, any edge you can get on your competition in Google search is a good thing. It also just looks better and more professional to have that padlock and the word Secure next to your url.

All our new websites will have an SSL certificate installed as standard so you won’t need to do a thing. If you currently have a website hosted with us, all you need to do is login to your hosting control panel and go to Let’s Encrypt and with a couple of clicks you’ll have your SSL certificate installed on your domain. Remember to change your domain to https in your WordPress settings and double check your images link to https.

So, there you have it. With SSL now being free, there’s absolutely no reason not to have it on your website and with a website build from Skocia Web Design, you’re automatically SSL secured.
